Inverter AC Vs. Non-Inverter AC: Which Saves More Energy?

The Energy Showdown: Inverter AC vs. Non-Inverter AC

Air Conditioners (AC) are lifesavers during the summer season. With climate change effects soaring, every household turns into an oven on hot summer days. Since summer is approaching many try to buy ACs to cool down their homes. One dilemma that confuses every buyer on his/her AC buying journey is inverter vs. non-inverter AC.

There are many differences between an inverter AC and a non-inverter AC. But what concerns buyers the most is the energy consumption levels of these varieties. At the end of the day, ACs are known to be power-hungry devices that send electricity bills soaring through the roof.

This video is sourced from YouTube@GARVEE

Let us examine the technology behind both inverter and non-inverter ACs and compare their energy consumption.

Inverter AC and Non-inverter AC: Which Is More Energy Efficient?

To know which one is an energy efficient AC, we should first analyze the technology that goes into each type of AC. ACs are fitted with compressor motors that regulate the temperature levels. These compressor motors are the heart of the air conditioning system and play an important role in its energy efficiency.

Energy Efficiency of a Non-inverter AC

The compressor motor of a non-inverter AC is a fixed speed compressor. Imagine that you have switched on a non inverter AC. The  fixed speed compressor will start functioning at its full capacity until the room reaches the desired temperature. Once the optimal temperature is achieved the compressor turns off.

This cycle is repeated when the temperature level increases again, at which point the compressor activates to cool the air. So, a non - inverter AC must restart itself frequently at full capacity to maintain cooling. This constant switching off and switching on leads to more energy consumption and therefore, less energy efficiency.

Energy Efficiency of an Inverter AC

The compressor motor of an inverter AC is a variable speed compressor. As the name suggests, the compressor adjusts its speed continuously based on the cooling requirement. Once you turn on the AC, the compressor runs at a high speed to cool the room quickly.

When the room has cooled down to the temperature you have set, the compressor slows down but keeps running at a lower speed to maintain cooling efficiency. If more cooling is required, the compressor increases its speed slightly to increase the cooling level. So, instead of stopping and restarting, the compressor adjusts to maintain the temperature level, leading to low power consumption and increased energy efficiency.

Inverter AC vs Non-inverter AC

Inverter AC vs Non-inverter AC

Let’s have a look at some of the other differences between these two cooling units:

• Cooling performance

As you might have already guessed, inverter AC delivers steady temperature control thereby attaining maximum cooling performance. There are no sudden drops or spikes in cooling which means the chillness of the room is maintained at all times.

On the other hand, with a non-inverter AC there are sudden spikes and drops in cooling because the compressor motor cannot maintain the cooling level as it intermittently switches on and off.

• Noise levels

Due to the abrupt switching on and off activity, the non inverter AC produces more noise compared to an inverter AC. The frequent start-stop cycle of the compressor, will distract you occasionally with noise of the machine coming to lie.

Inverter AC operates more quietly because the compressor runs at variable speeds. The compressor keeps adjusting its speed, ensuring smooth and steady operation without abrupt power surges. Also, since the compressor runs at lower speeds most of the time, it generates less noise.

• Cooling speed

Inverter AC adjusts the compressor speed dynamically cooling the room faster.  When you turn it on, the compressor runs at a higher speed to cool the room quickly. Once the set cooling level is reached, it slows down to maintain consistent cooling without fluctuations.

Non-inverter AC takes longer to reach the set temperature since the compressor works at a fixed speed.

• Durability and lifespan

Since the compressor motor undergoes constant power cycling, hte components of the non-inverter AC experience more mechanical strain. Plus, the wear and tear on the compressor motor is significant. This reduces the lifespan of the machine.

On the other hand, an inverter AC adjusts its compressor speed gradually, reducing strain on its internal components. This minimizes stress on the machine, leading to fewer breakdowns and lower maintenance costs over time. Therefore, the durability and lifespan factor favor inverter ACs.

• Cost and maintenance

Although an inverter AC is more expensive than a non-inverter AC, it offers long-term savings through lower electricity consumption. Thanks to the dynamic compressor, it consumes 30-50% less energy, reducing your monthly power bills. Non-inverter AC might be more affordable initially but may need more maintenance over time due to compressor wear and tear.

Inverter AC is the best option if you are looking for an energy efficient AC. They are smarter and more efficient due to their energy savings, faster cooling, quieter operation, and longer lifespan. It also features superior cooling experience making it a better choice for modern cooling needs.
